05:54:06 <kimmo> hey, is this behavior intentional: I have a single placeholder account "Profit/Loss" as the root for all expense/income type accounts. "Income statement" report works fine, as does "Income/Expense chart". However, "Income piechart" and "Expense piechart" reports give me the 'no data or all zeroes' error if the said root account is not of the report type, even though all sub-accounts are selected in the options?
05:59:24 <kimmo> Also, would it be possible to be allow Equity type accounts under Liabilities? Or maybe a typeless placeholder account?
06:04:11 <kimmo> Rationale behind this: The bookkeeping and reporting laws that at least I have to follow have an "Assets" account on the same level as "Liabilities and Equity", as well as "Profit/Loss" as the header on all other accounts. Having this grouping allows me to use gnucash exports directly in authority reporting, which is nice...
06:04:55 <kimmo> atm I have all equities as liability accounts, can't really think of any downsides to that, then again I haven't really tried anything fancy there

14:07:18 <LiF0> I am trying to use GnuCash 2.2.5 on Win32. Everything seems pretty good but I can not print. On 2.2.4 my characters appeared inverted vertically. Now on 2.2.5 if I try to print I get an "Unspecified Error" box.
14:44:18 <LiF0> I just installed 2.2.6 to see if it made any difference -- no difference. Print Invoice will show me the invoice but if I click the Print button on the toolbar, I get "Unspecified fatal error encountered, aborting." When I click OK, I get the MS VC++ "Runtime Error!" dialog.
14:49:11 *** warlord has joined #gnucash
14:49:55 <andrewsw> LiF0: I'm no windows user, but what happens when you print to pdf? There is a "create pdf" option in the print dialog.
14:52:44 <andrewsw> LiF0: does the application crash? or does it just throw up an error dialog and carry on?
14:54:10 *** warlord is now known as warlord-slow
14:54:12 <andrewsw> LiF0: look at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=538647 and see if it is related.
14:54:15 * warlord-slow waves from Dingle
14:54:37 <jsled> Dingle?
14:54:42 <warlord-slow> Dingle, Ireland
14:54:49 <jsled> Oh. Cool.
14:54:51 <andrewsw> nice!
14:55:25 <warlord-slow> Anyways, I need to head out for dinner and music, so I wont be back for about 5 hours.
14:56:16 <jsled> enjoy.
14:56:27 <andrewsw> have a nice pint!
14:57:37 <warlord-slow> andrewsw: Absolutely!
14:58:57 <warlord-slow> (now that I'm no longer *driving* today)
15:35:12 <LiF0> andrewsw: It's pretty hard to tell if that error is the same as mine. They didn't really provide enough details in the bug
15:35:18 <LiF0> andrewsw: I don't get the print dialog.
15:49:07 <andrewsw> LiF0: oh not at all? I see... it helps if I read.
15:49:43 <andrewsw> are you guys able to run gnucash from a console (command prompt) in windows? that might provide some insight.
15:55:41 <LiF0> what would I see?
16:00:52 <LiF0> jeez that's frustrating
16:01:04 <LiF0> worthless error messages can be really annoying
16:01:16 <andrewsw> put them in pastebin.ca
16:01:30 <andrewsw> that's console messages right?
16:01:33 <LiF0> no
16:01:38 <LiF0> you're obviously not a windows user
16:01:53 <andrewsw> :)
16:03:00 <andrewsw> you might want to post this on gnucash-user, maybe one of the windows folks will see it. otherwise, just keep hangin' out.
16:03:12 <andrewsw> sooner or later a windows literate dev will show up.
16:03:29 <LiF0> i'm a windows dev
16:03:41 <LiF0> maybe i should get the source
16:03:50 <andrewsw> see? I told you one would show up! ;-P
16:03:54 <LiF0> lol
16:04:04 <andrewsw> I mean one of the gnucash devs who is familiar with windows issues...
16:04:11 <LiF0> yeah i knew what you meant ;)
16:04:19 <LiF0> i just tried printing a check
16:04:20 <LiF0> and that worked
16:04:30 <LiF0> so i'm thinking it may just be related to invoices.......
16:04:40 <andrewsw> IIRC check printing uses a different print system.
16:04:49 <andrewsw> one uses gtkprint and the other uses gnomeprint
16:05:00 <LiF0> nothing like being consistent...
16:05:07 <andrewsw> mid-transistion.
16:05:17 <LiF0> hopefully in the direction that works for me :)
16:05:19 <andrewsw> (but spelled properly)
16:05:30 <andrewsw> I suspect not. I think check printing is still gtkprint...
16:05:41 <LiF0> oh.
16:05:48 <andrewsw> you need to talk to andi5 when he comes around, I think he is somewhat up on that issue.
16:06:08 <LiF0> seems like maybe a gnomeprint issue then.
16:07:08 <andrewsw> have you upgraded your gnome stuff lately?
16:07:37 <andrewsw> you might try wiping out everything that gnucash brought in and starting over too...
16:07:39 <LiF0> I thought they would be installed with the Win32 bin instaler
16:07:51 <andrewsw> yeah. probably so.
16:07:53 <LiF0> ack! keep my data tho, i hope..?
16:08:01 <andrewsw> yeah, of course.
16:08:23 <andrewsw> But, it's better to try and diagnose the problem while it still exists
16:08:36 <andrewsw> assuming you're in a position to operate without printing for a bit.
16:08:45 <LiF0> it hasn't worked for monthes
16:08:51 <andrewsw> oh.
16:08:54 <LiF0> I'm just lucky I don't have a lot of customers ;)
16:09:17 <andrewsw> Can you export invoices? I think you can. instead of printing it, export it to html, open in browser, print.
16:09:27 <LiF0> I've been printing invoices by screen-capping the invoice page and pasting it into a doc and printing that. yeah, it looks like crap...
16:09:37 <LiF0> export to html doesn't look the same as the internal one
16:09:53 <LiF0> it actually looks better if i screencap and print than try printing the html garbage it exports
16:10:42 <andrewsw> drag.
16:11:04 <LiF0> Yeah
16:11:16 <LiF0> I think I might as well just buy Quicken or something.
16:12:26 <LiF0> As much of an inquisitive programmer as I am, I really just don't have time to deal with this kind of stuff. And if it ends up cutting into billable time then Quicken pays for itself pretty quickly.....
16:13:36 <andrewsw> sorry I can't be of more help. I'm something less than a part-time dev... and not on windows.
16:13:59 <andrewsw> But there are others who can help, depending on your patience level.
16:14:50 <LiF0> yeah, and I don't really know anything about gnome or gtk...
16:15:07 <andrewsw> just to clarify, did it *ever* work for you?
16:15:30 <LiF0> properly? no
16:15:49 <andrewsw> oh i see... inverted
16:15:50 <LiF0> One of the earlier versions I had installed last year printed everythign upside down
16:15:55 <LiF0> I believe it was 2.2.4
16:16:07 <LiF0> but hell, atleast it printed.
16:16:10 <andrewsw> I saw an email the other day about how to determine which printing system to use...
16:16:14 <andrewsw> let me see if I can find it.
16:16:19 <LiF0> you mean you can switch?
16:16:40 <andrewsw> I think it's a build option... which would mean building gnucash on windows... no mean feat.
16:18:45 <andrewsw> looks like I got it backwards... moving from gnomeprint to gtkprint. it appears.
16:18:50 <andrewsw> http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=462148#c30
16:19:08 <andrewsw> suggests that it's possible to build it custom without gnomeprint.
16:19:19 <andrewsw> you might post on gnucash-dev for more details... andi5 is the man.
16:19:33 <andrewsw> s/dev/devel/
16:20:38 <LiF0> yeah, i did mension i'm a windows dev, right? luckily i use perl so I know what you mean :)
16:20:53 <LiF0> mension. awesome.
16:21:00 <LiF0> s/s/t/
16:21:12 <andrewsw> heh
16:21:15 <LiF0> awetome.
16:21:26 <LiF0> lol. okay back to work. thanks for chatting :)
16:21:27 <andrewsw> too bad I wasn't using perl... that was sed ;-P
16:21:38 <andrewsw> yeah. good luck with it.
16:21:43 <LiF0> yeah. same crap works in perl.
16:21:51 <andrewsw> whoosh
16:21:56 <LiF0> i don't know sed, awk or python or any of that crap
16:22:11 * andrewsw thinks this is heading downhill fast
16:22:54 <LiF0> and i avoid RE like the plague in perl...
16:23:08 <andrewsw> that's good. that stuff makes my eyes bleed.
16:23:29 <LiF0> lol

19:51:52 <warlord> And yes, it's probably a printing issue.. (not sure what *it* is)
