00:36:31 <warlord> jeremy: can you get a backtrace?
00:36:48 <warlord> see http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Backtrace
00:37:27 <warlord> but I'm off to bed so I'll respond tomorrow.
00:37:29 *** warlord is now known as warlord-afk
00:37:47 <jeremy> <warlord> I tried earlier, but then gnucash froze up.
00:39:58 <jeremy> warlord: ok, gnite.

04:49:05 <romkyns> i've been noticing that on numerous occasions the account name autocompletion refuses to select certain accounts, but i still can't narrow down the cause. It's happening again now. Does anyone know what to avoid in the account names to keep the autocomplete working?
04:49:54 <romkyns> At the moment my top-level accounts are AL, Inc, Exp, Special; the feature refuses to select Inc when I type the letter "i"
04:50:32 <romkyns> but it works for all other accounts
05:04:54 <romkyns> another question: is there a way to order transactions in a certain way within a day? When a large number of transactions happens in a day it is useful to capture the cash balance in the morning, mid-day and evening - which i do by entering a blank transaction with the amount recorded in the comment.
05:06:15 <romkyns> if I record the balance on a piece of paper I may later need to insert the transaction between two other specific transactions on the same date. Is this possible? How?

10:09:22 <gncbot> warlord: The operation succeeded.
10:10:29 <warlord> romkyns: You cannot have the account separator character in an account name.
10:10:52 <warlord> As for the transaction ordering, it always use debits before credits, but you can order them by using the 'num' column.
10:11:10 <warlord> Sememmon: Yes, it looks like www.gnucash.org is down. I'll send mail to Linas.

15:02:38 <baalwww> hi. is there any migration path from QuickBooks 2008 to gnucash?
15:03:48 <jsled> If you can get it to export as QIF, then yes.
15:04:27 <jsled> (in the other #gnucash) you mentioned it was able to export IIF and CSV … depending on how script-handy you are, you might be able to convert the CSV to QIF pretty readily.
15:05:16 <jsled> See <http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_How_do_I_convert_from_CSV.2C_TSV.2C_XLS_.28Excel.29.2C_or_SXC_.28.21OpenOffice.org_Calc.29_to_a_QIF.3F> for an example
15:05:22 <jsled> (using awk)
15:06:00 <baalwww> I've not tried the csv export... supposedly it can export all its 'lists' to excel, but whether that ends up being a complete export, I don't know
15:07:37 <baalwww> jsled: thanks for the lead :) Intuit stopped using QIF in 2006... maybe at some point gnucash will support IIF
15:09:48 <baalwww> ah, maybe not...I just read there are no plans to provide functionality to import from quickbooks... sort of like mac when they used to say no plans for a migration from windows
15:10:17 <jsled> where did you read that?
15:10:23 <baalwww> the link you gave me
15:10:36 <baalwww> Q: How do I import my data from Quickbooks(TM)?
15:10:37 <baalwww> A: At this time there is no way to import from Quickbooks, and there are no plans to add that functionality. The Quickbooks QBW data format is a proprietary, non-documented file format. So until someone documents the file format or donates a QBW file parser your best bet for importing your QB data into GnuCash would be to output your data in a CSV format and either import the CSV data...
15:10:39 <baalwww> ...directly or convert the CSV to QIF and use the QIF importer.
15:11:10 <baalwww> a shame considering QB has the major market share
15:11:12 <jsled> Ah. Well, take "no plans" not such much as "we've decided not to" so much as "no one has yet done, or announced that they are actively working on."
15:11:21 <jsled> s/such much/so much/
15:11:22 <baalwww> ;) gotcha
15:11:49 <jsled> AIUI, IIF isn't nearly as documented as QIF, though QIF is fragmented and dialecty.
15:12:32 <baalwww> yes, well, it benefits them not to document IIF. But, as another example, open office would have far fewer users if they couldn't open MS Office files
15:12:42 <jsled> true.
15:13:32 <baalwww> I know I've had it with QB's no-upgrade-path, I chalked up a few hundred in 2006 for QB, and now, with Vista, you have to run 2007 or 2008, and it costs just as much

22:26:11 <warlord> FTR, looks like www.gnucash.org is back online.
22:26:18 <warlord> According to Linas it was a failed mobo.
22:26:32 <warlord> I'm wondering if we should use the tip jar to acquire more modern hardware for www.gnucash.org?
22:50:00 <jsled> we should get linas to cede control.
22:50:14 <jsled> He's not even tangentially affiliated anymore.
22:52:58 <warlord> Well, I suppose that's another option.

23:52:56 <Sememmon> ouchie, failed mobo.. that's no fun
23:53:55 <warlord> yeah. he had an extra on hand to swap in, but apparently that's it. and it's old.
23:54:13 <Sememmon> not good.
23:54:59 <warlord> that's why the suggestion to replace it.
23:55:11 <Sememmon> too bad it isn't hosted at a place that does hosting.. so he could just worry about the software and let someone else deal with the hardware.
23:56:33 <warlord> svn/wiki/email isn't, either. It lives in my basement.
23:59:28 <Sememmon> =O
