06:32:22 <HS> hi
06:33:19 <HS> our country is going to switch to EURO since 2009
06:34:07 <HS> what is the recommended way to handle this in gnucash?
06:35:04 <HS> in mailing list archives i've found some discussions about druid that should help with it
06:35:37 <HS> however i can't find it (in 2.2.3)

12:51:00 <Hackwar2> hey guys, I'm looking for a financial accounting software, but I don't know if gnucash is the right thing for me. I have a kind of special situation here, since we are a non-profit organisation and in some parts a form of governmental organisation... I'm from germany, so if somebody from germany, familiar with the laws could help me?
12:51:26 *** Flakk has joined #gnucash
12:53:07 <Flakk> Hello people, I have a very basic question about gnucash. I am using it for some time and am quite happy with it. Now I am going to change my hard drive, to re-install my OS (debian etch) and I would like to transfer the gnucash to the new hard as it is now . Is it possible? if yes, how shoudl I proceed? Thanks for any help
12:54:16 *** warlord-afk is now known as warlord
12:54:50 <warlord> Hackwar2: You might have better luck asking on the gnucash-de mailing list. Few people here know the German laws
12:55:00 <Hackwar2> ok
12:56:07 <Hackwar2> hmm, in any case, I think you guys will be able to help me with some questions... We have 5 people working in our financial area. Is gnucash supposed to be used in such a multi-user situation?
12:56:21 <cortana> Hackwar2: not simultaneously
12:56:30 <warlord> Flakk: just copy your data file. If you want you can also copy your ~/.gnucash tree and your ~/.gconf tree.
12:56:32 <cortana> Flakk: you should just need to opy your data file
12:56:44 <Hackwar2> ok... that basically eliminates gnucash. :-(
12:56:46 <cortana> best to tar up your whole $HOME :)
12:57:26 <cortana> Hackwar2: maybe you could use http://www.linuxcanada.com/quasar.shtml
12:58:16 <cortana> hrm... looks like they closed the source code since i checked last
12:58:30 <Hackwar2> hmm...
12:59:01 <Flakk> cortana: wait :) $home is another story )) - so assume I have now a new computer (a new hard actually). I guess the first thing to do would be to install the gnucash, right? however in this cas it will create its own data and all this am I right?
13:01:16 <cortana> Flakk: not quite...
13:01:25 <cortana> installing the 'gnucash' package won't createa ny data files
13:01:30 <cortana> that is only done when you run it and save something :)
13:04:17 <Flakk> cortana: what id the "data file"? at present I have a directory"gnucash" which is full of files like euro.20080417152759... etc ... aand also the .gnucash folder but I can not find the "data"
13:05:09 <cortana> it's the file that you open in gnucash and that contains your data :)
13:05:19 <cortana> it sounds like your data file is probably gnucash/euro
13:05:43 <cortana> the files like gnucash/euro.200804.... are backups
13:05:45 <Flakk> yes you re right )
13:06:06 <Flakk> the basic file is called "euro" and it is 24KB gzip archiv
13:06:12 <cortana> that's the one
13:06:17 <Flakk> is it this file you call "data"?
13:06:19 <Flakk> OK
13:06:48 <cortana> yeah it's annoying that gnucash doesn't give its data files a standard ending like .gnucash or something ... it causes no end of confusion :)
13:07:14 <cortana> as for your ~/.gnucash directory, it contains settings such as the files you have open, the windows and tabs associated with them, etc
13:07:21 <Flakk> so the procedure is like follows: 1) I install gnucash in the folder say A then 2) I copy to A the "euro" file then 3) I launch gnucash
13:07:22 <cortana> so it's not vital, but there is no harm in backing it up
13:07:28 <warlord> Why is it annoying? You can name your data file whatever you want. I find it annoying when programs force endings.
13:07:45 <Flakk> no prob about it _ i am happy with any sort of endings )
13:07:57 <cortana> as am i, but we're not all that clever :)
13:08:02 <cortana> it means the file doesn't get a nice icon and file association in the file manager
13:08:11 <cortana> and it really, really confuses Windows users
13:08:12 <warlord> Flakk: Not quite.. 1) just install the gnucash problem. 2) copy your data file. 3) Run GnuCash and File -> OPen the data file.
13:08:22 <warlord> cortana: well, windows users are stupid.
13:08:28 <warlord> (in general).. Thanks to Microsoft.
13:08:58 <Flakk> warlord: ok I think i get it
13:09:13 <warlord> er.. gnucash PROGRAM.
13:09:18 <cortana> yeah, i guess stupid users should just stay using myob or sage or MS money
13:09:35 <cortana> Flakk: if you are reinstalling everything, consider putting your /home on a separate filesystem
13:09:55 <cortana> that way, you can reinstall the base OS without having to copy all your files elsewhere and then back again :)
13:10:26 <Flakk> cortana: well I think I just save it on DVDs and keep it there, i will try to mount the old hard afterwards, but will fee safer with separate DVDs
13:10:41 <cortana> well, it's also a good idea to back up onto external media anyway :)
13:11:06 <Flakk> I will try lenny and leave the old hadr alone
13:13:24 <Flakk> BTW if I want to uninstall gnucash, is it as usual "apt-get remove gnucash"? I will try it all now on a second computer
13:14:11 <Flakk> (I mean I am at debian etch)
13:14:19 <cortana> yup that will work
13:14:43 <Flakk> ok, thx a lot! trying :)
13:16:59 <HS> hi, has anybody some advice about switch to EURO handling?
13:24:10 <Flakk> warlord, cortana: thanks a lot! it worked without any probs )
13:24:31 <cortana> Relax, it's Not Windows™
13:25:00 <warlord> :)
13:25:50 <Flakk> I know ) but I use to have probs with any kinds of soft :) so I'm happy - BTW I guess there is a great piece of sfot related to gnucahs which is finance:quote but never could make it work
13:26:04 <Flakk> *soft
13:27:14 <cortana> hm, have you got libfinance-quote-perl installed?
13:27:39 <cortana> (you should have--the gnucash package depends on it)
13:28:01 <Flakk> I do not know actually
13:28:36 <Flakk> let me see
13:28:49 <cortana> you can check with: 'dpkg --status libfinance-quote-perl' or similar
13:28:59 <Flakk> says not installed
13:29:06 <Flakk> (dpkg -l)
13:29:10 <cortana> interesting
13:29:18 <cortana> are you still on etch, or did you install lenny
13:29:25 <Flakk> what is it about the package?
13:29:28 <Flakk> etch
13:29:39 <Flakk> lenny is a projc\ect
13:29:50 <cortana> interesting... even etch's package depends on libfinance-quote-perl
13:30:02 <cortana> are you using the package from apt? or did you install gnucash by hand :)
13:30:22 <Flakk> er - wajig install gnucash
13:30:30 <Flakk> and he asks for the 1st DVD
13:30:38 <cortana> hm... dont' know what that is
13:30:57 <Flakk> never mind this is just a renamed apt get
13:31:02 <cortana> ah fair enough
13:31:37 <Flakk> so what does it do the package quote::finance?
13:32:01 <cortana> i believe it retrieves stock quotes from the web
13:32:27 <cortana> http://packages.debian.org/etch/libfinance-quote-perl :)
13:33:31 <Flakk> OK ) - well this is the next step
13:33:41 <Flakk> thanx for the help anyway!

17:31:32 <torsten78> hello everybody
17:33:46 <torsten78> I need some support with report development. Currently I have the problem that debugging is very hard because I have to relaunch GnuCash everytime I changed the report. And of course this takes some time. Is it possible to reload a changed report file without restarting GnuCash? Thank you!
17:33:55 <jsled> no, it's not.
17:36:51 <torsten78> ok. Thanks anyway. ... And all the cool reports allready delivered with GnuCash have been created this hard way? Impressive...!
