17:29:59 <reiffert> Hi. I'm packaging gnucash for macports. I found out that calling gnome_help_display("gnucash-guide.xml", NULL, &error); returns with "The default action does not support this protocol.". It appears that gnucash-guide.xml can be found at the expected place. I further noticed that running gnome-help ghelp:///opt/local/share/gnome/help/gnucash/C/gnucash-guide.xml works like a charme.
17:30:27 <reiffert> I think gnucash is calling gconf voodoo, so it looks like there is no default action registered for xml files (or docbook? or xlt?) How to solve this? As you may allready noticed, I'm not a gnome expert, I just want to make gnucash available to mac os x users. Thanks.

17:36:41 <reiffert> btw, error->message doesnt get used here, so nobody will ever know about this particular error message. It would be nice to add it there by DEBUG("Could not find help documentation %s: %s",file_name,error->message); or similar.
17:49:47 <reiffert> What packages is supposed to register the default action, is it gnucash[-docs], yelp or gconf? Something else?
17:51:25 <warlord> I'd say yelp.
17:51:42 <warlord> but I dont know.
17:53:52 <reiffert> And what exactly should be registered along with yelp? "open a .xml file results in opening with application $foo" or something?
18:00:49 <warlord> I'm afraid I really don't know.
18:00:56 <warlord> sorry.
18:01:41 <warlord> You could try asking on gnucash-devel?

19:13:33 <warlord> libgnome? or gnucash?
19:13:58 <reiffert> libgnome. That message should have gone to #gnome. I dont know any of the gnucash code yet.

20:51:05 <warlord> Okay... so what seems to be the workaround?
20:52:53 <reiffert_> to fix the yelp installation:
20:53:13 <reiffert_> a) running GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=$(/opt/local/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source) /opt/local/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule /opt/local/etc/gconf/schemas/yelp.schemas
20:53:31 <reiffert_> b) to check why the following command was not running and fixing the package who should run:
20:53:42 <reiffert_> GCONF_CONFIG_SOURCE=$(/opt/local/bin/gconftool-2 --get-default-source) /opt/local/bin/gconftool-2 --makefile-install-rule /opt/local/etc/gconf/schemas/desktop_gnome_url_handlers.schemas
20:54:04 <reiffert_> I'm currently documenting it as a ticket to the macports project, writing down all the details.
20:54:29 <warlord> Sounds like the former needs to be done by yelp. The latter... Not sure.
20:55:14 *** olsen has joined #gnucash
20:55:24 <reiffert_> if you like to improve gnucash, place a DEBUG("Opening the gnucash guide: %s returned: %s",file_name,error->message); to gnome-utils/gnc-gnome-utils.c:284 into the !assert()
20:55:31 <warlord> Figure out which package installed /opt/local/etc/gconf/schemas/desktop_gnome_url_handlers.schemas
20:56:10 <reiffert_> warlord: solved. No to all the details.
20:56:14 <reiffert_> s,No,Now,
20:56:22 <warlord> Cool!
20:56:30 <warlord> And could you send a write-up to gnucash-devel when you're done?
20:56:40 <reiffert_> Yep.
20:56:43 <warlord> Thanks.
20:57:04 <reiffert_> May it be enough when I send you a link to the macports ticket having all the details?
20:57:17 <reiffert_> and you place it along with some keywords to the devel list?
20:57:42 <warlord> Hmmm...
20:57:45 <warlord> I suppose.
20:57:46 <reiffert_> thanks.
20:58:11 <warlord> Oh, looking at that function it looks like there's already a PERR() of the error message.
20:58:33 <reiffert_> well it's not using error->message
20:59:13 <reiffert_> How could I be so blind?
20:59:37 <warlord> Sure it is.
20:59:45 <reiffert_> Where is the PERR supposed to go to?
20:59:51 <warlord> /tmp/gnucash.trace
21:00:07 <warlord> As will the DEBUG()
21:00:30 <reiffert_> hm, I explicitly had to define DEBUG() myself... that was a very strange thing.
21:00:52 <warlord> You shouldn't have had to... It's defined.
21:01:15 <reiffert_> only when DEBUGWRAPPER is defined.
21:01:43 <reiffert_> and DEBUGWRAPPER only lives in ltmain.sh
21:01:52 <warlord> No... it's defined in qoflog.h
21:02:25 <warlord> which is pulled in by qof.h
21:02:32 <warlord> So it should be in every gnucash source file.
21:02:58 <reiffert_> hm, running configure with --enable-debug didnt trigger it.
21:03:07 <warlord> Umm.. it's there.
21:03:21 <reiffert_> CFLGAGS=$FLAGS:-DDEBUG didnt as well. however.
21:03:37 <warlord> Well, THAT would cause trouble.
21:03:42 <reiffert_> yep.
21:03:58 <reiffert_> I dont remember if I had an additional -DDEBUGWRAPPER
21:04:14 <warlord> take a look in lib/qof/qoflog.h -- you dont need it for DEBUG() to get implemented.
21:04:19 <warlord> it's always defined.

21:05:09 <warlord> Note that this is only in GNUCASH.. It's not a general gnome/glib thing.
21:07:40 <reiffert_> My secret assumption is, that I'll have to use DEBUG on gnucash :-)
21:07:56 <reiffert_> damn, put a "never" somewhere in betweeen.

21:57:14 *** andrewsw-afk is now known as andrewsw
21:57:18 <andrewsw> tbic: no
21:58:09 <andrewsw> unless they were all in one account, alone, then I think you can delete that account and take the txns with it.
21:58:12 <andrewsw> not sure on that though
21:59:10 <warlord> Actually, no, that wont delete the txns..
21:59:12 <warlord> just the splits..
21:59:18 <warlord> and leave all the txns in Imbalance.
21:59:23 <andrewsw> eww...
21:59:25 <warlord> tbic: what exactly are you trying to do
21:59:38 <tbic> No these and in a search, I'm tring to split my transaction from last year in another book
22:00:26 <warlord> Ahh.
22:00:30 <warlord> No, no good way to do that.
22:00:43 <warlord> why do you want to do that?
22:01:58 <tbic> So on the accounts page the totals reflect year to date
22:03:27 <andrewsw> is this not what the new books closing code does?
22:05:07 <warlord> tbic: depends on which column
22:05:22 <warlord> andrewsw: it doesn't create a new file or delete old transactions -- it just adds a '0' split.
22:05:44 <tbic> For Income and Expenses Yes, But not Assets or Liabilities.
22:06:04 <tbic> warlord: which column?
22:06:29 <andrewsw> but that makes the total column in the accounts page reflect YTD then, right?
22:06:41 <andrewsw> (as well as the balance in each register)
22:08:32 <warlord> true, but you dont need to zero-ize Assets and Liabilities.
22:10:16 <tbic> warlord: Correct, I was just hoping to create a new book for 2008, automatically creating the Transaction in Equity:Opening Balances and ether splitting the file or removing transactions before 1/1/08
22:10:51 <warlord> Ah. No, there's no automated way to do that.
22:11:40 <warlord> You could File -> Export Accounts to create a new file with JUST your account structure but no transactions...
22:11:49 <tbic> I'll take a look at how close book is handled, see if I can modify it to what I want, thanks

22:28:21 * andrewsw eyes income-statement suspiciously
22:30:07 <andrewsw> I'll play with that patch next week and see what it does to performance. I have a pretty good test file, I think, any improvement of more than a couple % should show right up.
22:32:20 <warlord> It should fix the "GetBalanceAsOfDate()" API to be much quicker.
