00:24:12 <jasperbg> quick question
00:24:23 <jasperbg> i run a business that imports speakers and sells them in the local market
00:24:47 <jasperbg> currently i list the purchase of speakers as an expense, and then the sale of speakers as income
00:24:57 <jasperbg> but this hides the fact that the speakers are an asset while they sit in the warehouse
00:25:12 <jasperbg> i'm just trying to get my head around how i could represent this.
00:25:16 <jasperbg> has anyone done something similar?
00:28:39 <jasperbg> would something like: transfer from bank account -> asset account for stock (when purchasing speakers), and then split transaction from asset account and income account -> bank account (when selling them)
00:28:44 <jasperbg> seem sensible?
00:29:56 <jasperbg> the problem i have with that, is that the income account then represents the *profit* on sales, rather than the value of sales
00:30:55 <mishehu> you might need to discuss this with a real accountant... heh.
00:31:03 <mishehu> my head is already spinning
00:32:37 <jasperbg> yeah
00:32:39 <jasperbg> it makes my head spin
00:33:08 <jasperbg> there's not much wrong with the current income/expense structure i'm using, except that in the interim few days between buying and selling speakers, it looks like business ain't going so well :P
00:33:24 <mishehu> I personally don't deal with that, when I buy something for resale, I usually just stick it in expenses and ignore the fact that it's an intangible asset while in my possession
00:33:30 <mishehu> I don't know how correct my practice is though.
00:33:38 <jasperbg> yeah, i don't think there's anything incorrect about that
00:33:57 <jasperbg> it just doesn't show the asset, which annoys me
00:34:05 <mishehu> the problem is balancing your transactions
00:34:07 <jasperbg> because a glance at the accounts makes it look like you just squandered a whole load of cash
00:34:23 <mishehu> you want the purchase to come up as an expense, you want the sale to be income, and you want to have the asset until the sale.
00:34:45 <jasperbg> exactly.
00:35:03 <mishehu> the asset part is what I'm having trouble reconciling without skewing the books in some way or another.
00:35:37 <jasperbg> exactly
00:36:29 <mishehu> I normally keep track of my inventory outside of gnucash...
00:36:45 <jasperbg> it's sort of the capital gains stuff at http://svn.gnucash.org/docs/guide/capgain_concepts1.html
00:36:47 <mishehu> maybe one of the other guys here has an idea how to do what you're trying, but they don't seem to be around at the moment.
00:37:10 <jasperbg> except that i would prefer my "income" account to show the total value of sales, rather than merely the capital gains (or rather, the profit on the sales)
00:37:18 <jasperbg> yeah
00:37:24 <jasperbg> i have to go, i might try asking in here again another time
00:37:28 <jasperbg> or talking to my accountant =)
00:37:32 <jasperbg> thanks
00:37:32 <jasperbg> see ya
00:37:36 <mishehu> no prob.

17:02:17 <Kenny_X> hello
17:03:35 <Kenny_X> I just downloaded gnucash for windows and I'm trying to figure out how to enable spanish, but I can't find anything in the wiki...
17:04:10 <Kenny_X> does anyone know where I can find some info on this?
17:04:19 <jsled> http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_I_want_to_use_GnuCash_in_my_own_language_.28Debian_users_may_need_it.29
17:04:27 <jsled> Though the file to modify here is gnucash.bat.
17:05:00 <Kenny_X> oh, ok let me check
17:05:02 <Kenny_X> thank you
17:07:21 <Kenny_X> oh wow that worked thank you so much!
17:07:24 <jsled> :)
17:07:36 <jsled> you're welcome.

18:27:57 <cortana> nice :)
18:37:54 <BenB> 21242 substracted too much

18:47:51 <BenB> ???
18:48:02 <cortana> maybe worth filing a bug about?
18:48:22 <cortana> the developers tend to be around in the day time (eu)
18:48:36 <BenB> heh, I am in europe :)
18:48:47 <BenB> 0:45 here
18:49:16 <BenB> cortana: there's nothing I'm missing? hidden transactions or something?
18:49:33 <cortana> i can't really say, i'm just a user :)
18:49:45 <cortana> but i'd like to find out what the answer is too :)
18:55:28 <BenB> cortana: ah, this is since I played back a few .log files.
18:55:36 <BenB> (import | Log-File)
18:56:13 <BenB> luckily, I saved the file before I did that. not that I could recover with it, did too many changes since then, but at least I know what caused it

21:34:50 <andi5> hi... i am making up a patch for bug 115066 (wanted: search all items) ... to make it postable i would like to gather some quick feedback on the wanted behavior in business find dialogs... what i did: * let user remove last criterion, grey out match-type combo, add "Matches all label" at the position of the criteria list; * revert that once a criterion is added again.... when searching invoices the criteria list is reduced by search_clear_criteria

21:35:38 <andi5> [hm, this was not logged, so i do not know whether anything got cut off]
21:36:57 <andi5> now even the last element can be removed, so i wonder what the user wants to see
