08:21:51 <garp> Anybody with an ideas what to do: I did ran gnucash 2.2.3 on Windows XP Professional. After a reinstallation of XP I was not able to get gnucash successfully installed again. The program seemed to have been isntalled successfully but when trying to run it there will be an error message "An error occurred while loading or saving configuration information for gnucash." The detailed information...
08:21:53 <garp> ...states "failed to connect to configuration server". I am online (obviously) and the Windows-Firewall is open for "GCnf Settings Manager" and "GNUCash free finance manager".
08:21:54 <garp> Any suggestion would be mich appreciated.
08:21:56 <garp> garp
08:24:39 <warlord> garp: have you looked at the GnuCash wiki Windows page?
08:26:11 <garp> yes, but I did not find anything that seemed relevant. Some suggestions on really completely de-installing gnucash which I followed but ot no avail.
08:33:03 <warlord> Did you try removing all your .gnucash and .gconf directories?
08:35:27 <garp> This was one of the suggestions from the Wiki and I tried. The .gnucash directory was recreated upon reinstalling gnucash. But no difference.
08:35:29 <garp> Here is the content of the gnucash.trace file. Maybe it helps:
08:35:30 <garp> "* WARN <qof.engine> [guid_init()] only got 2300 bytes.
08:35:32 <garp> The identifiers might not be very random.
08:35:33 <garp> * WARN <gnc.app-util> Could not spawn perl: Failed to execute child process (No such file or directory)"
08:35:47 <warlord> that's fine.

11:08:43 <foo> Hm, if I generate reports... can I select a report that basically shows everything that the "accounts" page shows but for just 2007?
11:10:16 <jsled> foo: the account summary report?
11:11:11 <foo> jsled: yeah, I found just found that. Is there anyway to spit that out for 2007?
11:11:13 <jsled> Though it does everything until a certain date; not everything within a certain time range.
11:11:28 <jsled> Options > General > Date.
11:11:56 <foo> Hm, I don't know if that's good or bad. Is there a reason why it can't do a date range?
11:12:24 <jsled> I don't know, frankly.
11:13:31 <foo> I haven't finished book keeping for last year and I'm already inputting data in for this year...
11:13:35 *** arigold has quit IRC
11:14:43 <foo> oh, I can select "previous year end" ... and I think that just shows 2007, since I started in the beginning of 2007, right?
11:15:49 <warlord> It shows you, effectively, "balance as of [date]"
11:16:58 <foo> ok, I started book keeping in gnucash beginning of 2007. I select Date 12/31/2007... that should show me only 2007, I believe.
11:17:07 *** joerlend_ has joined #GnuCash
11:17:10 <foo> Would it make sense to be able to show accounts for, say, 2006-2007? any idea why it can't do that warlord?
11:17:32 <warlord> But what does that mean?
11:17:33 *** aindilis has quit IRC
11:17:34 <jsled> either way, yeah. "Previous year end" in 2008 is the same as entering the date 2007-12-31.
11:17:45 <foo> jsled: thought so
11:18:04 <warlord> What does it mean to "show accounts tfor, say, 2006-2007"?
11:18:06 <foo> warlord: It means I can select a date range instead of just an end date. So, I could pull up figures for a month, or a year, or a quarter... or something
11:18:11 *** aindilis has joined #gnucash
11:18:44 <warlord> foo: Ahh, so you want to see Account DELTAs over a period of time?
11:19:04 <foo> Hm, not sure what a delta is. :) Hmm, what is that?
11:19:38 <warlord> DELTA == Changes
11:19:44 <jsled> foo: the Cash Flow report takes a date range.
11:20:02 <warlord> But the Cash Flow reports things...strangely.
11:20:38 <foo> jsled: ah, I see
11:20:52 <foo> warlord: ah, in that case, yes
11:21:13 <warlord> For example, if on Jan 1 2007 you had $100 in AcctA, and on Dec 31 you had $250, you'd like a report that says: Jan 1 - Dec 31 / AcctA: +$150
11:23:00 <foo> warlord: ah, yeah, something like that. Although, this may be my misconception rather than a program limitation. Hm, for next year... at the end of the year I'll need a way to split out accounts for all of 2008... eg. if I had an expense in 2007, don't show in 2008.
11:24:07 <warlord> foo: Run the P&L (Income Statement) report.
11:24:14 <warlord> (or close the books)
11:24:17 <warlord> ... or both.
11:24:35 <warlord> P&L/IS reports give you starting/ending dates.
11:25:29 <foo> ah, ok. Hm, for "closing the books" - when would one normally want to close the books? At the end of a fiscal year?
11:25:46 *** XiXaQ has quit IRC
11:27:06 <warlord> Generally, yes.
11:27:31 <foo> ah, I see. Can I select to close the books 2 weeks ago? I suppose I probably could
11:27:40 <foo> eg. set a date on when I want to close the books
11:30:12 <warlord> Yes.
11:30:27 <warlord> Note that the book closing code isn't in the stable release, yet.
11:31:17 <foo> warlord: Thought so, ok, sounds good. Thanks for the help jsled + warlord. I've been super swamped and just wanting to make sure gnucash is capable... I'm sure it is, I just have a few (several) misconceptions. I'm taking an accounting class ATM.

13:00:04 <yenemy> Hi all; fairly new Gnucash user here. Loving it so far, but I was wondering if there was a way to spiff up the invoices a little bit. E.g., if there was an xml template I could edit to include a logo, or a new layout, that kind of thing
13:01:37 <yenemy> oop, never mind... found it in the docs
