09:49:04 <Hibernator> Hi everyone. I would like to know what to do with a specific fixedassests account once I no longer have that asset (e.g. sold my car or house).
09:49:21 <jsled> Hibernator: hide it. delete it. ignore it.
09:49:42 <Hibernator> jsled: yeah, but if I delete it, won't that effect the rest of my budget?
09:50:08 <jsled> I'm not totally sure how budgets work, but maybe. So, don't delete it. :)
09:50:27 <Hibernator> jsled: right, but I didn't pay attention to the _hidden_ option, great idea thanks.
09:51:18 <Hibernator> Another question, in the wizard for creating accounts, there are 3 accounts that I don't know what I need them for:
09:51:40 <Hibernator> 1) Imbalance 2) Orphan 3) expenses:adjustment
09:52:00 <jsled> 1 and 2 you shouldn't need. They should always be zero.
09:52:14 <jsled> They're both used variously to represent transactions that aren't fully accounted for.
09:52:29 <jsled> But, since we enforce double-entry, we have to have *some* account to link the Split with.
09:52:55 <jsled> So, gnucash will make that split go to either Imbalance-{Currency} or Orphan-{Currency}, depending on the situation.
09:52:58 <Hibernator> jsled: ok, So I guess this is when _Deleting_ an account would transfer to either one of these accounts right?
09:53:05 <Hibernator> I see, fantastic
09:53:17 <Hibernator> what about expenses:adjustment? what's that about?
09:53:18 <jsled> When entering transaction/splits, if you ever see Imbalance, you should work to eliminate it.
09:53:30 <jsled> Actaully, deleting an account should prompt you to move the transactions somewhere else.
09:53:53 <jsled> It's more that imbalance is used for unfinished/incomplete editing, and Orphan is used for ... well ... bugs.
09:54:16 <jsled> Just random adjustments to account because things don't line up 100%, maybe.
09:54:45 <Hibernator> jsled: hmm, if that's the case, should I have an Income:adjustment too (if things don't add up negatively)?
09:55:24 <Hibernator> err, what am I saying, I can just use the right column, never mind
09:55:54 <jsled> Right. This is more for asset accounts, for which most transactions balance against Expenses.
09:56:22 <jsled> Hibernator: have you read the tutorial and concepts guide? It sounds like you have a pretty good handle on all this, but it still might be useful
09:56:35 <Hibernator> I see. Wonderful. One more thing, if there are any committers here, thanks, this app kicks ass and it changed my life.
09:56:41 <Hibernator> jsled: read it end-to-end
09:56:58 <Hibernator> jsled: but still, those were the few things bugging me
09:58:07 <jsled> Hibernator: Glad to hear it's had such a positive impact. :)
09:59:51 <Jaran|zZzZZz> it's got a negative impact on me :( i spend money just to have some data to feed into gnucash :P
10:00:06 *** Jaran|zZzZZz is now known as Jaran
10:00:35 <Hibernator> Oh, if anything it made me stop spending
10:01:02 <Jaran> hehe was just kidding
10:01:18 <Hibernator> excellent, simple, robust, and more professional than those amateur-like packages.
10:02:18 <Hibernator> oh .. What if I want to reset my accounts (say new financial year)? Do I have to write everything down from scratch?
10:02:38 <Hibernator> especially if I have some A-Receivable and A-Payable accounts?
10:03:13 <jsled> The values, yes. :( You can export your account tree (only ... i.e., no transactions) via File > Export > something...
10:03:48 <Hibernator> jsled: ok, so I export the tree, open it again with gnucash, and fill-in the opening balances, and I'm fresh and ready for the new year right?
10:04:39 <jsled> Right. And it'd be really nice if we just had a wizard to do that, but we don't.
10:05:08 <Hibernator> fantastic, that's more than enough questions for today
10:05:10 <Hibernator> you guys rock
10:07:00 <jsled> :)
10:07:51 <jsled> roxlu: you have a bunch of questions about mixing your personal finances/account with your business finances/account. You really should talk to a accounting professional about how to handle them.
10:08:30 *** bock has quit IRC
10:09:00 <jsled> roxlu: we're not generally opposed to talking about how to do accounting (within gnucash), but that case in particular is really tricky, and has legal ramifications.
10:15:10 <roxlu> okay thanks a lot
10:15:34 <roxlu> I discussed it with someone and I know what to do.. I just need to create a declaration form and send it to my 'company'
10:17:19 <jsled> ah, great.

12:33:38 <jsled> Huh. A video email hit the moderation queue.
12:38:44 <jsled> I guess I have no really valid reason to reject it. It is gnucash related.
12:38:48 <jsled> It's just a horrible idea.
12:41:17 <Jaran> lol
12:42:11 <jsled> I mean, at least it's a url to a video-email service (with obnoxious ads), rather than an attachment or something.
12:42:33 <Jaran> did you watch it?
12:43:15 <jsled> yeah. I almost didn't, because it's just like two hyperlinks. But the subject line was "Gnucash in windows", and spams just aren't that good.
12:44:17 <jsled> But I'm waiting for the day, when they permute existing/cotemporal subjects or traffic from the mailing list. I guess it's just too costly.
