18:38:12 <jsled> gncbot, tell james re: VAT he should see <http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Q:_How_do_I_use_GnuCash_to_calculate_VAT.3F>.
18:38:12 <gncbot> jsled: The operation succeeded.

19:00:45 <Search4Lancer> why do packages lag so far behind? Kubuntu is telling me today that there's a new version of GnuCash, but, when I check the details, it has me upgrading to version 2.0.5
19:01:18 <jsled> heh.
19:01:23 <jsled> Well, that is the most recent stable
19:01:30 <jsled> (of course, it was released months ago)
19:01:37 <Search4Lancer> exactly
19:03:15 <jsled> Well, my non-authoritative but experience-d answer is that packages lag far behind because a) package managers are in short supply/overworked. b) gnucash is too complex, c) some undefined reason I'm not sure of.
19:03:40 <jsled> For Kubuntu in particular, you're like 2 hops down the chain...
19:03:48 <Search4Lancer> oh fun
19:04:11 <jsled> And debian/ubuntu had a big release/package freeze a while ago that introduced a long/large bubble in the pipeline, so to speak.
19:04:25 <jsled> (/!)
19:04:46 <jsled> Gentoo is pretty good about being really current. ;)
20:24:05 <lasindi> In gnucash/src/gnome-utils/dialog-utils.c on line 816, why does it make sure that root is not NULL?

21:48:55 <andi5> damn, somebody should have told me that 2.1.4 was due... grrr
21:50:38 <andi5> lasindi: that test is rather old, maybe it stems from a time that was necessary? do you need it to accept NULL?
21:51:17 <lasindi> andi5: I don't *need* it, but it would be nice if I could pass NULL to it.
21:51:54 <lasindi> Would it be acceptable to change that in my branch, or would it cause problems later if it were merged into trunk?
21:53:48 <andi5> lasindi: two minor thing when you load your graphical interfaces... (1) do not leak the xml (we do that pretty often), e.g. g_object_set_data_full(G_OBJECT(dialog), "xml", xml, g_object_unref); ; (2) show it (the top-level dialog widget) only when it is fully initialized/filled .... that would be damn cool :-)
21:55:22 <andi5> i think that is perfectly acceptable... just make sure you use one commit for all sorts of different changes (we had that before---was it me? well...)
21:55:35 <andi5> you do _not_ use ...
21:56:23 <andi5> (wrt showing the top-level widget, one can mark the dialog as hidden in glade)
21:57:16 <lasindi> Where do I need to put g_object_set_data_full(G_OBJECT(dialog), "xml", xml, g_object_unref);? I am doing g_object_unref(xml); in a "free" function I wrote ... is that okay?
21:57:47 <andi5> yep
21:58:51 <lasindi> Alright, I'll try to do all of the above. :-)
21:59:46 <andi5> :-) ... nice to see things moving on... maybe i should start tracking the branch :-)
22:00:48 <lasindi> You can. It's very fragile at the moment; unless you use the test file I have, it will probably crash right now, but hopefully that will change soon. ...
22:09:23 <andi5> lasindi: i do not how many printfs you use, but maybe you could replace them by g_debug---debug messages are not printed to /tmp/gnucash.trace only anymore (at least i thought they were, now ~/.gnucash/log.conf can control precisely what you need) .... that way you can keep the debug messages and also do not need to readd them when debugging it later on... :-)
22:11:17 <andi5> see http://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Logging for an example log.conf file =)
22:12:09 <lasindi> Ah, ok, I'll start replacing them.
