08:57:09 <bx2> prob setting invoice to fancy style anyone?
09:04:00 <jsled> what's the problem?
09:05:28 <bx2> how do you get the invoices to remain in fancy?
09:06:03 <bx2> can you set it as the default?
09:08:04 <jsled> I don't know. I thought Fancy Invoice was a report ... how are you invoking the non-Fancy invoice?
09:08:38 *** RallyU has joined #gnucash
09:09:12 <bx2> beats me? also cannot find any info abou this in help
09:09:32 <jsled> beats you? How are you invoking the invoice?
09:10:15 *** RallyU has left #gnucash
09:11:14 <bx2> i have easy invoice as default when after i post then go to print, i have tried to change it in report options, but it will not work
09:16:52 <jsled> As of Feb 2006 it was desired by others as well <https://lists.gnucash.org/pipermail/gnucash-devel/2006-February/016230.html>. Derek did not respond to that request saying "oh, that already exists".
09:24:42 <bx2> how would a person install a patch to GNU cash
09:25:29 <jsled> Like a single patch file? Well, you need to be building from sources, and more specifically from the set of sources that the patch was generated against.
09:26:04 <jsled> Actually applying the patch is usually as simple as running `patch`, then rebuilding/reinstalling.
09:26:29 <bx2> running patch from where terminal?
09:26:45 <jsled> uh, yeah.
09:26:58 <jsled> What patch are you thinking of?
09:27:22 <bx2> fancy invoice
09:28:00 <bx2> actually i have seen briefly another invoice style in gc not listed in the style sheets is this possible?
09:28:31 <jsled> I don't know what you mean.

09:33:48 <bx2> when trying to change invoice style, i have viewed default easy fancy and one other with all caps for my name and customer name, now i can't seem to find it again, wierd or what?
09:34:29 <jsled> That sounds a bit weird.
09:38:45 <bx2> Also, is there an updated manual for this? the one i am using doesn't seem to have anything about invoices
09:39:04 <jsled> Which version are you using? 2.0.5?
09:39:52 <bx2> Im not sure, installed in ubuntu add/remove
09:40:02 <jsled> What's in Help > About?
09:40:26 <bx2> It's 2.0.2
09:40:44 <jsled> I'm pretty sure you've got the most recent docs, then.
09:41:20 <bx2> there is nothing in the help contents or tutorial
09:41:44 <jsled> Nothing at all? Is the 'gnucash-docs'
09:41:49 <jsled> ... package installed?
09:42:04 <bx2> how would i check that?
09:42:18 <jsled> Through your package manager
09:46:25 <bx2> doading now

23:10:44 <jmd> Where has the Profit and Loss report gone in gnucash 2.x.x ??
23:16:05 <hampton> It was renamed. Can't remember what to.
23:17:34 <jmd> hampton, I can't find any name which seems to have remotely similar meaning.
23:18:51 <dbr> I'm pretty sure it became the Income Statement
23:22:23 <jmd> dbr, Looks like you're right. Thanks.
23:22:31 <jmd> It's a misleading name IMHO
23:22:41 <dbr> you're welcome
23:23:11 <dbr> but I think it matches accounting terminology
23:25:10 <jmd> I'm not an accountant, but I've always seen "Profit/Loss" statements on tax returns (or "Surplus/Shortfall" for non-profit organisations).
23:25:31 <jmd> Maybe it matches US accounting terminology .....
23:27:22 <dbr> Hmm. Maybe I'm thinking it matches what corporations show in annual reports. IANAA, so I'd probably think some pieces of gnucash are weird regardless
23:27:56 <dbr> U.S., yes
23:28:47 <jmd> I'm not sure that I'm happy with the way that I've lost the Start/End of Financial Year menus either.
23:29:56 <dbr> Aren't they in Edit/Preferences/Accounting Period?
23:30:09 <jmd> Now it appears to be just "Start of Accounting Period" so I suppose I have to manually change it every year.
23:30:57 <jmd> The report option dialogs no longer give me "Start of Previous Financial Year" for example.
23:31:20 <jmd> So it'll be harder for me to pull up reports from previous years.
23:32:09 <dbr> But "Previous year start" is in the options dialog for the Income Statement (at least in 2.1.0/svn)
23:33:29 <jmd> But "Previous year Start" means the calendar year? Not the financial year so it's something not many people would ever wnat.
23:34:26 <dbr> I don't think so -- it's previous accounting period start.
23:34:57 <dbr> set accounting period in Edit/Preferences, set previous year start and end in report options.
23:35:40 <dbr> oops. maybe not. I don't print often.
23:37:02 <dbr> I guess if I had to do a previous accounting year, I'd go ahead and enter the dates manually.
23:37:25 <dbr> I haven't run into that since I run both personal and business (ha!) finances on a calendar year
23:39:00 <jmd> The taxman lets you do that?
23:39:55 <dbr> In some sense the taxman insists. I have a single member LLC, which means I file a Schedule C with the IRS that aligns with my personal tax year.
23:41:21 <jmd> I see. (well actually I don't. I'm not a US resident, so most of those words mean nothing to me).
23:42:24 <dbr> LLC is Limited Liability Company. It's kind of like incorporation on the cheap side. Since no one works for me, my 'corporate' income is treated like a small personal business.
23:43:02 <dbr> There are plenty of large LLC's but once you get past one person, you end up with a different tax return (I think.)
23:46:24 <dbr> I think US regulations let each company set financial year starting dates as they see fit. Within some restrictions, but not many.
23:47:15 <jmd> Right. They're called "Private Limited Companies" in the UK as opposed to a "Public Limited Company"
23:47:38 <jmd> But most countries have a financial year for everyone.
23:48:17 <jmd> Often 01 April --- 31 March
23:48:36 <jmd> But in Australia its 1 July -- 31 June
23:48:43 <dbr> The US is weird like that. I've worked for companies with fiscal years all over the place.
23:49:33 <jmd> Actually, I think it makes sense. It means that their workload isn't all concentrated as one time of the year.
23:50:02 <dbr> retail in the US is frequently 1 April - 31 March. Government is 1 October - 30 Sep. Universities are usually 1 july - 30 June
23:53:01 <jmd> Maybe if you were clever you could use 1 March -- 28 Feb, then every 4 years you'd get one day tax free :)
23:53:19 <dbr> Wouldn't that be nice?
